For some challenges, the value specified will be a range (say, 7–9) but for others the value is a precise number. In these sprints, mistakes lead further down the track of failure, which causes players to go mad, or push victory further and further away. Once the failures have been taken care of, all the cards that were played during the Encounter phase are discarded. The current leader takes the nicely crafted airplane model and places it onto any coastal space (for the first turn) or any space adjacent to the space currently occupied on the following turns. The die either makes you discard equipment cards from the deck - the only way to get cards back into the deck is rest, which permanently loses you a leadership token - get 2 injury cards, or straight discard leadership tokens.

You’ve got to figure things out, and since time is limited and everyone has their own hand of cards, you can’t rely on one person telling everyone else what to do. As a result of the flexibility and ease of play, I recommend Mountains of Madness more highly than I thought I would. Leadership tokens are also used for other abilities, like restarting the Encounter phase or refreshing cards. If a player speaks or tries to communicate in any way, the Leader is forced to discard a Leadership token. Suddenly, someone is speaking in math problems rather than just telling you what numbers they can contribute.

And so it was with tempered excitement that I approached Mountains of Madness, published by IELLO and distributed in the UK by Coiledspring Games. I sat on the hard, wooden bench in the rear of the plane, surrounded by the arcane artefacts we stole from that mountain.Fans of Lovecraft’s stories and games like Elder Sign, Eldritch Horror and Arkham Horror may enjoy this one. You might however wish for a bit more depth in what can feel like a slightly too complex party game.
