Using a Feelings Jar can help remind us that it is normal to experience many emotions about a situation, and that it is okay to need different things on different days.

Not many years back I found myself in a life I didn’t recognize, feeling confused, sad, and so small. Sometimes having a firm hug can be far more comforting that someone telling us it is all going to be ok. But unlike the previous picture book I read, this one has value and merit for children to learn to control their emotions because everyone knows children are volatile. I really enjoyed the first book in the series, in which a bunny puts all sorts of gorgeous moments in jars and finds a friend/lover along the way! Afterwards, he feels surprisingly better and decides to simply feel his feelings as they occur and then let them go.

When you wake up feeling overwhelmed with emotion and unsure what you need, you can grab your Feelings Jar and take a moment to look through the squares of paper. This story contains the positive message that all feelings are temporary and will pass and that it’s best to feel one’s feelings, good or bad, in real time. It did me too until I learned that the actions of my spouse had nothing to do with me, my worth, or my lovability. A coping skills jar is a way of connecting with your child in the moment, helping them to identify how they are feeling, and then redirecting them so that they are able to manage their feelings using useful strategies.

You know, the one where even as you are saying it, a little voice at the back of your mind is reminding you that it is NOT useful and the parent guilt that you are about to feel will definitely not be worth having said it! But we can see that as each emotion gets throw into the jar and into the dark closet that things are changing. Think of a challenging situation that has happened in your life and fairly present for you every day – could be a tough dynamic at work, something happening in the larger world, a loss, etc.One of the best tools that we can give our children is to help them identify how they are feeling, and then to make a good choice around how they can manage that, so that they can feel better. In the tradition of Aesop's Fables, children learn that all their emotions are valid and that they are necessary. Love, I can see you are feeling frustrated because your drawing is not working out as you would like it too. Although we know that it is actually as a result of an accumulation of feelings through the day, when the meltdown happens, we don’t really know how to move our children forward!

And when we can hold ourselves and our feelings in a compassionate way, I believe that gets us all a little closer to peace.

Welcome to Family Fridays — a series designed to give parents and children fun, meaningful activities you can do at home to explore feelings of grief and remember your loved one in unique ways. I'd say it's a great abstract look at how to deal with unwanted emotions, especially for 4-5 year olds with big feelings.
