Description

Canon hasn't revealed the manufacturer of the image sensor used in the PowerShot G7X digital camera, but we note with interest that its specifications look a whole lot like the Sony-manufactured silicon used in the competing RX100 II and III. We're not sure how they've managed it, but in one fell swoop Canon has brought forth a convincing rival for all three cameras in a single model, at least on paper. Yes, sometimes it fails to focus, but touch a spot on the screen to focus on and you're on your way (a great reason to choose the G7x over the Sony). The RX100 III brought an electronic viewfinder and a more consistently bright (albeit shorter) zoom, helping it climb even further beyond the competition.

The four-way controller itself also offers controls for Drive mode / Wi-Fi, Focus mode, Flash and Display on its cardinal directions. There's a long list of obvious improvements that should be made in Canon's app (which applies to all wifi canons). The image quality is definitely better than a phone and its OK if you allow a waiter or a non photographer friend to take a photo. Left of and behind this is the Power button, while a popup flash strobe can be seen at the far left end of the top deck. Update: The Canon G7X has been replaced by the Canon G7X Mark II, which gets an updated exterior design as well as a faster DIGIC 7 image processor. The G7 X isn't quite good enough to oust the RX100 III from its perch as our favorite premium compact, but it's an attractive alternative for shooters who prefer a longer zoom range over an integrated EVF.

A modest thumb grip at the top right corner helps secure your purchase when shooting stills single-handed, though. I imported the TIFF images into the current version of Lightroom and applied the +25 Sharpening and Color Noise Reduction that the software normally applies to Raw images by default. What the above graph should make clear is that the G7 X is amongst the most consistently bright compacts on the market, once sensor size has been taken into account, which should give excellent control over depth-of-field (including at focal lengths useful for classic portraiture) and low light performance. The new edition comes with a few fundamental innovations, the improvements are to be found in the details.
