As it’s raining non stop today and I’m not as hardy as the sheep, I’m inside playing with wool and natural dyes. Both kinds, if you crinkle up a leaf in your hands, give off a pleasant citrusy smell that is distinctive to the juglans family.

Michael Ondaatje is a celebrated poet, novelist, editor, and filmmaker, best know for his 1970 poetry collection The Collected Works of Billy the Kid , and his 1992 Booker Prize–winning novel The English Patient, which was adapted into an Academy Award–winning film by the same name in 1996. I've not yet gotten around to this, but in theory one could make all the colours of the rainbow from these base inks. Over the subsequent year and a half, I intimately documented Logan’s creative process, from foraging raw materials to creating coloured inks in his kitchen lab. If you are wanting to get into more serious ink/dye making with kids, I would suggest you get a pan that you *never* use for cooking food in.Tip - for very 'pulpy' inks, a better pre-filter is Japanese Tea Bags, (last picture) as these strain out the water well, but you'll need to re-boil and filter through tissue again to get a clearer ink. Some care needed to avoid eating the berries or indeed stalks (as they are toxic), but again - use your judgement on this. People who see it are just drawn to it and spend ages looking through, I just love colour and this book is an absolute gem.
